Natural Hair Treatments and Remedies

People sometimes ask if there are any remedies for hair problems or conditions that can be made from ingredients found in the home or at the grocery store. And lots of people are looking for natural products to use on their hair and skin.

While there are "home remedy" beauty treatments for skin and hair, they usually only work on the surface; giving only temporary results. The molecular structure of these ingredients is too large to be absorbed by the hair. Therefore, it's not possible to have any long lasting reparative effect. But in certain cases, they can help.

Here are a few recipes and ingredients for natural treatments and what they will do for your hair and skin.

  • A great recipe for a "kitchen" hair treatment is to mix together 1 cup of mayo with 1 mashed avocado, 1 whole egg, beaten and 1/4 cup of olive oil. Apply to shampooed, damp hair. Leave for one hour. Shampoo lightly afterwards and condition as normal. Great for coarse, dry or overly curly hair. The oils in this treatment will coat the hair and scalp making the hair look shinier, while weighing down overly curly hair and controlling frizz.
  • Apple Cider vinegar makes a great rinse for hair, especially after at-home hair color. It closes the cuticle and returns the hair to its natural acid balanced pH making the hair shiny and helping color last.
  • Lemon juice really does bleach the hair. Apply pure lemon juice to your hair, for example, in the front to create soft natural highlights around the face. It takes repeated applications to see results, so do it everyday for a few weeks. Be aware that the sun will enhance this process. Also be aware that your hair now behaves like "chemically treated" hair. So be careful with any other chemical service and tell your hairdresser what you've done so they can also protect your hair from any unwanted results from color or perming. Chamomile tea also works as a lightener for hair similar to the way lemon juice works.
  • Natural pure orange oil is great for removing residual chemical odor from the hair: for example from perms or relaxer or corrective color services. And it's healthy for the scalp also.
